Manchester United Hit Nine

Manchester United have just finished their game against Southampton at Old Trafford, and no could have predicted the outcome. For a second time in the Premier League, the Red Devils hit 9 goals in a single game.

This is also the second time that Southampton have conceded 9 in a game, to make matters worse it’s in back to back seasons. Ralph Hasenhüttl’s men were struck down to 10 men in the first 2 minutes of the game.

Young midfielder Alex Jankewitz, who was making his first start for the Saints, was sent off for a late and high challenge on Scott McTominay.

What followed will go down in Premier League history. United finished the first half 4-0 up thanks to goals from Wan Bissaka, Cavani, Rashford and an own goal from Bednarek.

Subsequently substitutes were made at half time with both Cavani and Luke Shaw being replaced by Martial and Van De Beek. Possibly a rest for two key players ahead of the 5th round of the FA Cup.

But even after a halftime team talk there was no salvaging this game for the Saints, in fact it was going to get much worse.

Man United were anything but remorseful hitting another 5 passed Alex McCarthy. Anthony Martial hit two, Scott McTominay, Daniel James and Bruno Fernandes scored a penalty. The penalty decision also resulted in Bednarek receiving a red card.

Leicester City were the last team to hit 9 goals in the Premier League, also against Southampton. However this is the second time Man United have won 9-0, the last being against Ipswich Town in 1995.

United have managed to go level with Man City, ahead of City’s match against Burnley tomorrow. Although we are still early in the season this could be a sign that they should be taken as serious title challenges.

However, this is only the third time this season that they have managed more than 2 goals at home. The other two in wins against Aston Villa and Leeds United. This is also only their 4th win in the league at Old Trafford.

If Manchester United can push on from this impressive performance and revive their home record, then there is a possibility that they could challenge for the league this year.
